"You can still know peace without knowing what comes next."

I always knew that I had a calling and desire to serve people.  I even pursued and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Human Services because it had been my dream to accompany those in need - especially those that need to be SEEN.

When Andrew and I started to build a family, it felt like I had to put the dreams of my future and calling on hold as I was dedicated to raising little ones, especially little ones with special needs. In doing so, our goal in parenting has been to help them be SEEN in the midst of their suffering....in recognizing their dignity and empowering them to be SEEN and to see others who are often marginalized and forgotten.

Now I find that this burning desire and passion within me has also become a part of our WHOLE family’s calling....and a tangible desire that I see in our children!

Our Calling

Through friendship during these seasons, we found a mutual understanding in the grief process, whether grieving a loved one or the loss that comes with disability, and the importance of accompaniment through the joy and suffering.

And the bigger vision started to materialize!  Still riding the swell of love and support from our community through Kim's cancer journey, it hit us...to give back what had been provided - a lifetime memory for a family in need.

Kim is much of the inspiration behind the origin of SEEN. She was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in August of 2021 at the age of 38. The love from community and friendships kept her RESILIENT in HOPE and optimism.  Kim was constantly a source of strength for others going fighting cancer, seeing them with compassion and encouragement.

During a break in chemotherapy schedules, we were encouraged to take a family trip.  Sensing the cancer spreading and time limited, we flew off to Kim’s dream destination of Hawaii.

This was the last opportunity they had to travel together.  Kim passed away 4 months later.  If not for friends who encouraged them to make the trip, it never would have happened, or would have been too late to enjoy in a meaningful way.

What a GIFT to have that family memory!  For the children, remembering Mommy smiling and being herself.  For Matt, a beautiful moment with his wife of 17 years.  For the family, a wonderful reprieve from cancer centers, doctor visits, blood work, chemotherapy, and the weight of illness.  We are incredibly grateful to create that final joyful family experience together while Kim had her last bit of strength.
